Know Your Stuff Video Transcript
A guide for trans and gender non-conforming folk who would like to access hormones via Shared Care but know nothing (like I did)! When you go to your GP, it’s handy to know your stuff! The General Medical Council (GMC) in the UK have put together a set of ethical guidance on trans healthcare. The published General Medical Council (GMC) advice states that: “If you’re a GP you should collaborate with a Gender Identity Clinic (GIC) and/or an experienced gender specialist to provide effective and timely treatment for your trans patients.” An NHS England report in January 2018, Looking at Primary Care Responsibilities in Regard to requests by Private On-Line Medical Service Providers to prescribe Hormone treatments for Transgender People stated that: “The NHS should not withdraw NHS care because a patient chooses to buy private care, nor should patients who access private care be placed at an advantage or disadvantage in relation to the NHS care they receive.” “The NHS should continue to provide free or charge all care that the patient would have been entitled to had they not chosen to have additional private care.” When you go to your GP be prepared to do some of the leg work yourself. Hopefully this has been a good place to start! Good luck!
